Ickleton Society Events – March to May 2014

Wine Tasting, Friday 28 March – we’re very pleased to announce that Sebastian Payne has once again agreed to host a wine tasting in the Village Hall Meeting Room at 7.30pm on 28 March.  As those of you who have been to previous wine tastings will know, this will be a great evening with a selection of interesting and unusual wines (none of your run of the mill supermarket plonk!) and lots of cheese and nibbles.  The charge is £16 for members and £17.50 for non-members.  Numbers are strictly limited so if you’d like to come along, contact Neil McKillen (tel 530475) as soon as possible.

Walk and Picnic, Bank Holiday Monday 5 May – following the success of the walk and lunchtime picnic held last year, we will be organizing a similar event this year.  This is free and open to everyone in the village and their visitors.  More details nearer the time.

AGM and Talk “The Great War in the Countryside”, Wednesday 14 May – in this year of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, we’re really pleased that local historian Helen Harwood from Great Shelford has agreed to give this talk which she will bring to life using specific people’s stories, for example that of a village baker, who had a “good war”, another about a conscientious objector.  She will talk about the fight between the military and the farmers to try and keep workers on the land, about soldiers billeted locally, bombing raids and being able to hear the guns on the front even here, and lastly the aftermath of the war.  The short AGM will be at 7.30pm, free wine and nibbles at 8pm and the talk will start at about 8.30pm.  Free to members (you can join on the night).  Non-members are welcome to come along for a small charge of £3.
