Return Visit to Coploe Hill Strip Lynchets & Baulks – Thursday 11 June, 7.30pm

When we visited last year, Sian and Peter Wombwell explained to us how, with the support of Natural England, they would be restoring the medieval strip lynchets. The work has been progressing and we’re very grateful to them for offering us a return visit to show us what has been done.

Everyone is welcome. Meet a little further up the hill this time – the gate on the right shortly after the pit.

There will be stock in the field but Sian and Peter will kindly fence off a small area inside the gate for parking if you want to drive up. Any dogs must be on a lead at all times please.

  1. I propose bringing the Archaeology Group from the Basildon & Billericay U3A to Ickleton on 12 August, primarily to see the mediaeval wall paintings in the church but also to visit the village itself plus, subject to permission, the strip lynchets on Coploe Hill and the Bronze? Age barrow at Vallance Farm. I wonder if someone can put me in touch with the land owners concerned.
My email address is as above and my telephone number is 01268 492640.

I should add that my 2x great grandmother Emma Carder was from Ickleton and at least 2 of her Carder ancestors were Church Wardens so I do have links with the village.

    Thank you,

    Alan Johnson,
    Group coordinator for Archaeology,
    Basildon & Billericay U3A
