This is the talk that Helen Harwood was unfortunately unable to give us at our AGM as she went into hospital at short notice. Helen is a local historian and lives in Shelford.  She will talk about the impact of the war on rural communities like ours, illustrated with stories of people, including some from Shelford, such as a village baker who had a “good war” and another about a conscientious objector, the fight between the military and the farmers to try and keep workers on the land, about soldiers billeted locally, bombing raids and being able to hear the guns on the front even here, and lastly the aftermath of the war.

Everyone is invited to join us for a talk that will be very fitting for the week of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.  The talk is free and will also be of interest to any secondary school children studying WW1.
