The timeline is an attempt to create a repository for Ickleton’s history starting with the general geological events which created the landscape and chronicling human events from prehistoric times to the present. This information is used to infer the evolution of a local population and eventually a recognizable nuclear village. Given the almost total absence of written records prior to the Norman invasion, it is Inevitable that much of this is speculative, it is nevertheless informed by known events and the available archaeology. The majority of timeline entries cover the period following the Norman conquest. Primarily extracted from the Victoria County History and therefore based on increasingly reliable evidence.
In order to help create a historical context, we have also included important national events such as the accession of monarchs.
